So you want to cook a turkey?
Whether you are cooking a turkey for your first time or your 50th time, the following post has everything you need to know about choosing your turkey from JD Farms and taking it home.
How do you get a JD Farms Specialty turkey?
Our on-farm store at 24726 52 Ave, Langley, will start having fresh turkeys at the end of September, right through to the week after Thanksgiving.
We will be open the following hours:
Oct 5 & 6 9:00AM – 6:00PM
Oct 7-10 8:00AM – 6:00PM
Oct 11 8:00AM – 5:00PM
Oct 12 CLOSED
You can also find our Turkeys at a retailer near you. Find one HERE.
No need to order ahead!
We don’t take orders for our turkeys, but no need to fear, we save LOTS of turkeys for our store. We do suggest you come early for best selection and grades though. You can hold a fresh, JD Farms Turkey from our store, in your fridge up to 4 days before cooking it.
How do you choose what size and Grade you need?
This Thanksgiving we will have 10 – 18 lb turkey hens (weight may vary plus or minus 2 pounds). If you require a larger turkey you might consider cooking two of our specialty hens or adding half a turkey. When ordering, plan on 1 lb of turkey for each adult and 1/2 lb of turkey for each child. This will provide enough meat to go around and leave a little bit left for the next day’s sandwiches.
Turkey grading is regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Grade A may have a wing tip missing or a small cut in the skin. At JD Farms the giblets and necks are packed in Grade As only. Utility Grade means that a part may be missing (usually a wing or piece of skin) and there are no giblets or a neck packed with it. Meat quality is the same for both grades. Poultry is graded by appearance only.
We will also have our Heirloom Bronze Premium turkeys available again this Thanksgiving. For a truly unique Turkey flavour, try one of these this year. Find out more info on this page:
